i love you and despise you
of the elves
When the Elves were first created, they traveled far and wide, into many of the realms below Valhalla, and in those lands they would settle, until the Gods sensed darkness rising in the World and sent out a call to withdraw the Elves into Alfheim.
So there came to be two major countries in the realm of the Elves, Imladris and Lorien. On the skirts of Alfheim, outside either of the two countries, was Greenwood. A menagerie of Elves, consisting mostly of a people known as Sindar, the Grey-Elves, but also the Teleri, the Nandor, and many others-- some even who were Noldor and Vanyar, though these bloodlines thinned with intermingling.
But these Elves soon began to ignore the words of the Gods, dabbled in the dark arts for the protection of their trees, and were thus banished from this realm.
They fled down Yggdrasil into Svartalfheim, where the Dark Elves dwell. Avari they were, Moriquendi, the Dark Elves who did not come to Alfheim at the Gods' beckoning. They did not readily welcome their brethren refugees, but in time they altogether became known as the Wood-Elves, different from the Tree-Elves of Lorien who spend their time in twilight, their lands protected from evils.
The main Elven forest of Svartalfheim became Mirkwood, and though it was dark and easily seen as corrupted, its inhabitants had love for the trees that went beyond what one might appreciate. Together they tamed the creatures within the woods, cared for that which did not destroy the trees to survive. The spiders, though feared, were also sometimes allies in driving other evils out of the forest.
So have they lived with little concern for the outside world, save for gathering news about who had plans to visit and their reasons for doing so. And they live only to see the day when that evil will be banished, that they may spend their days in peace instead.

the forest of great fear
Taur-nu-fuin. The Forest of Great Fear. The Forest Under Deadly Nightshade.
So were these woods called that the Dark Elves occupied. Elves they were, a peaceful and good people-- or should have been. The shadows of Svartalfheim made them fierce, made them deadly. It is said a Mirkwood Elf is more inclined to shoot first, burn the corpse, and not ask questions at all. Rumors, perhaps, but not too far from the truth.
Legolas is one of these Elves. Though he is the son of King Thranduil, he has no interest in ruling Mirkwood with a title of inherited and assigned royalty. He and many other warriors pledge their faith to the Forest, to Mirkwood, to Greenwood, in all names she has had and ever will have. They would die for their forest, and they would more than willingly kill for her and her people.
